Gather, Gathering — art glass, handblown glass
Both the name for going to the furnace to get glass (to gather, gathering) and for the glass gotten (first gather,
second gather). The end of the blowpipe or punty is lowered into the glass and turned to drag the glass evenly around
the pipe or previous gather. Similar to turning an old fashioned wooden pickup in honey. Molten glass is over 2000
degrees Farenheit.
Gilded — art glass, handblown glass
Metals, such as gold, fired onto glass.
Glassblowing — art glass, handblown glass
Glass term used to describe two totally different operations: Working glass at a torch and working glass from a furnace.
Glass done at a torch is also called lampworking or torchworking and includes scientific glassblowing, neon tube working,
and artistic tube and solid work. Furnace glassblowing, also called off-hand glassblowing, involves collecting molten glass
melted in a high temp furnace and shaping it on the end of pipes and punties using tools that range from newspaper to high tech
metals.
Glass Casting — art glass, handblown glass
Warm glass process of melting liquid glass into a mold.
Glaze — ceramics
A coating of material applied to ceramics before firing that forms a glass‒like surface. Glaze can be colored, opaque, translucent
or matte and has a similar oxide composition to glass, but includes a binder.
Glory Hole — art glass, handblown glass
A second high-temperature chamber, heated to about 2500 Fahrenheit, used for reheating glass and maintaining a consistent working
temperature.
Gold — handcrafted jewelry, metal
A precious, heavy, yellow, metallic chemical element with a high degree of ductility and malleability. Pure gold is usually
alloyed with other metals — such as silver and copper, to create a tougher materials with similar characteristics.
Gold‒Filled — handcrafted jewelry, metal
A base metal overlaid with gold.
Greenware — ceramics
Clay objects that are unfired.
H
Hand‒built — ceramics
Clay object that was assembled by hand but could include wheel‒thrown, cast, coiled and/or slab elements.
Hollow Casting — ceramics
The process of pouring liquid clay slip into a hollow plaster mold to create a shell of a specific shape.
Hot Glass — art glass, handblown glass
Glass worked in its molten state directly from the furnace at temperatures above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hot Shop — art glass, handblown glass
Slang term for glass studio, it most commonly refers to the physical area within a studio or glass factory where the melting
and working of furnace glass occurs, in contrast to the Cold Shop or Cold Working area where grinding, carving, smoothing, etc.,
takes place.
